ELIZABETHTON — The Carter County Sheriff's Department is awaiting the results of an autopsy that was conducted on Wednesday at Quillen College of Medicine to determine the cause of the death of 4-year-old Coty Cox.
Deputies responded to a 911 call around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday at 340 Lovers Lane. They found that two older boys, aged 13 and 10, had carried Cox to a neighbor's house where 911 was called.
The boys told deputies that Coty had been jumping on a bed when he was injured. Mathes said he was suffering from severe trauma to the head. Mathes said the emergency medical responders were able to resuscitate the boy for a short time.
Mathes said the boys were questioned about the incident. He said they had been left alone with Coty while his mother left the residence for what she said was a short time. He said there was evidence the boys had been fighting, but said it was just normal "kid's stuff."
Mathes said the death "was really sad and it has been hard for our officers, especially those with children."
