'Step into the SONshine': Temple Baptist Church presents biblical musical for Fun Fest

Temple Baptist Church will present “Step into the SONshine,” a musical featuring a cast of children, youth, adults and live animals, as part of Fun Fest 2013.

Shows will be at 4 and 7 p.m., Sunday, July 14 in the church’s 1,000-seat auditorium.

The drama depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments in a colorful, yet compelling way that all ages can appreciate.

“We hope it is a message that other churches and Christian people can relate with ... and that above all else it will glorify the Lord,” said Stanley Miles, the show’s music and drama director.

Some of the scenes in the drama include Moses and the burning bush, the prophecy of Isaiah, the Christmas story and nativity, Jesus’ ministry, resurrection and ascension, and a finale promising Jesus’ return.

The character of Jesus will be played by Josh McClain, Temple Baptist’s youth minister.

“It is an honor to play the role of Jesus and to portray him, but the idea, not just in my role, or anyone’s, but everybody is in it because we want to share the gospel of Christ and make it come to life so people can experience it,” he said.

Noel Fuller will play Blind Man Bartimeaus, a poor man who hears of the miracles of Jesus. Though he is not optimistic, he seeks healing and gains his sight.

“I think that what Jesus did then, he can do today, and I think people need to realize that he is the great physician,” Fuller said. “I hope people come away from this message of the healing of blind Bartimeaus and know that Jesus can perform the even greater miracle of salvation.”

Temple Baptist’s pastor, Brian Schuler, will narrate the show. Schuler’s wife, Melissa, is responsible for costumes and played a major role in the set design.

The cast will be accompanied by an ensemble of singers from area churches, including Indian Springs Baptist, Higher Ground Baptist, Temple Baptist and Colonial Heights Baptist.

Creation Kingdom Zoo of Gate City, Va., will provide camels, sheep, goats and donkeys for the show. Thirty minutes prior to each performance, a petting zoo will be open for people to meet the show’s four-legged cast members.

“Step into the SONshine” lasts approximately one hour and 15 minutes. Free refreshments will be available in the Family Life Center after each show.

Tickets are $3 and may be purchased at the door or at the Fun Fest store in the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce at 400 Clinchfield St. in downtown Kingsport.

Proceeds from ticket sales will cover the cost of the production, and any additional revenue will go toward future shows.
