The Peoples Choice Art Walk, a competitive art exhibit being held in conjunction with this year’s Jonesborough Days festival, will kick off tonight with a free wine reception at the International Storytelling Center and balloting in 22 downtown shops.

Public voting will continue through the Jonesborough Days festival and wrap up with an announcement of the top three winners Sunday evening, July 7, at the Storytelling Center.

Tonight’s reception with the 17 local artists featured in the competition will be held from 5 to 8 on the plaza in front of the storytelling center. The Missing Parsons Report band will be performing. Refreshments will be provided by event sponsor 11E Wine & Spirits. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Art Walk ballots will be available at the storytelling center and the competition’s 28 featured pieces of art work, including sculptures, water color and oil paintings and photographs, will be on display in 22 downtown shops and restaurants.

Downtown businesses will extend their hours to 8 p.m. to help kick off the voting. And the public will be encouraged to tour the participating shops and restaurants, select their three favorite art works and return their ballots to the Storytelling Center.

The voting will continue through July 7, with ballots available at the Storytelling Center and at each of the participating shops and restaurants.

Bridgette Ward, director of the McKinney Culutural Art Center, said the featured works of art were selected in keeping with this year’s “Living and Loving Jonesborough: Small Town, USA,” Jonesborough Days theme. And because the festival is a patriotic celebration, the Art Walk “will celebrate people’s democratic right to vote.”

Ward said visitors will have the opportunity to meet featured artists at tonight’s reception as well as be the first to view and vote on the artwork.

And in addition to tonight’s reception and extended shopping hours downtown, the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre will present the opening performance of its 1940s USO Show beginning at 7:30 at the theater on Main Street.

Jonesborough Days will get under way at 5 p.m. Friday, July 5th.
