ABINGDON, Va. — The name of a teen who drowned near a boat dock in South Holston Lake Thursday evening has been released.

Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman said the body of 15-year-old Jeffrey Allen Owens of Meadowview was found just after 10 p.m. Thursday.

Dispatchers were informed just before 9 p.m. that Owens had possible drowned off Ahoy Lane, near Avens Bridge, on South Holston.

“According to witnesses, the victim was swimming a short distance from the boat dock when he began struggling in the water.  Attempts by friends to rescue the victim were unsuccessful,” Newman said in news release.
