A Florida man was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun after a 25-minute standoff at a local hotel, police said.
Police were called to Value Place Hotel, 135 Pinnacle Drive, in response to Aaron Michael Bever, 29, 228 Palmwood Drive, Apt. B, Dnuedin, Fla., threatening himself with a gun, court documents said.
A witness saw and described a gun that Bever was holding to his head, police said. The door to Bever’s room was slightly ajar, and when police knocked on the door, they heard the distinct sound of a holster unsnapping. Bever then slammed the door on the officers, police said.
He then barricaded himself in the room and wouldn’t come out for 25 minutes until he was talked into coming out by phone, police said. A search of the room found a pistol holster in plain view on top of a garbage can. A search of the room was done, and officers found a loaded .25-caliber pistol hidden in the air conditioning unit.
A records check was done on Bever, and he was found to be a convicted felon in Florida. He was placed into custody and transported to Johnson City Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. A Sessions Court date was scheduled for Monday.
