Former North Carolina player and St. John’s assistant Laura Barry joined East Tennessee State’s women’s basketball coaching staff on Thursday.
Barry spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant for the Red Storm’s women’s team. She was part of two Atlantic Coast Conference championship teams for coach Syliva Hatchell during her playing career at UNC (2007-09), and reached the NCAA Final in 2007.
“We are excited to announce the addition of Laura Barry to our coaching staff,” ETSU head coac Brittney Ezell said. “Laura is the perfect complement to Nikki Davis and Brittany Burkhardt and brings a wealth of experience to our program from her playing days at the University of North Carolina and her time spent as a graduate assistant at St. John’s University.”
Prior to St. John’s, Barry assisted head coach Kate Costanzo at Allegheny College in Meadville, Penn., from 2010-11. Before going to UNC she played the 2004-05 season at UNC-Wilmington under for Tar Heel assistant Ann Hancock.
“This university has a tradition of success in women’s basketball and we aspire to push that even further moving forward,” Barry said. “I am thrilled to work with this group and to bring excitement about this women’s basketball team to the community.”
Barry graduated from the UNC with a dual bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science and Communications Studies in 2009.
