Carter man steps on gun, shoots foot

ELIZABETHTON — The Carter County Sheriff's Department reported that a man was accidentally shot in the foot on Monday afternoon when he stepped on a loaded 2-shot .22 caliber Jennings derringer.

Deputy Dave Ryan spoke with Brent Shaver, 24, while  he was being treated at the Johnson City Medical Center. Shaver said he was at Jack Hyder's house on Dry Hollow Road for a cookout. He said some of the guests were doing some target shooting in the front yard and he walked out of the house to join them.

As he was walking down the steps, he said he stepped on the derringer and it fired into his left foot, going through the sole and exiting through the heel.

Ryan talked with Hyder, who said he had picked up another gun to fire at the target after he had reloaded the derringer. He placed the derringer on the steps after picking up the other gun.

Ryan said the damage to Shaver's shoe was consistent his injury.
