Belk to provide free mammograms in area from its Go Mobile center

The Belk company is bringing its BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center, a 39-foot-long, state-of-the-art mobile breast screening center, to the Tri-Cities area to increase breast cancer awareness and provide free, convenient, confidential on-site mammogram screenings.

The center will be available from 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, June 18 and 19, at the Belk store at The Mall at Johnson City and Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, at the Belk store at the Fort Henry Mall in Kingsport.

Women age 40 and over who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months and who have a primary care physician are eligible. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 855-655-2662.

The screenings will be performed by licensed, female, mammography-certified technologists from Charlotte Radiology and interpreted by  a board-certified radiologist specialized in breast imaging. Confidential results of the screenings will be forwarded to the patients and to their primary care physicians.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based Belk corporation initiated the program in partnership with Charlotte Radiology to increase early detection of breast cancer by bringing convenient, digital screening to all of its market areas. Launched earlier this year, the program is beginning at the 113 Belk stores located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, where the mobile center will be conducting free on-site mammograms through January.

Jessica Graham, Belk’s vice president of communications and community relations, said the company’s $6 million investment in the program is the single-largest charitable contribution in Belk’s history and is based on the company’s commitment to women’s health issues and breast cancer education.

“Having the BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center travel to the cities where our associates and customers live and work underscores what we’ve being saying for a long time — awareness and early detection saves lives,” Graham said.

Graham said Belk is the only retailer of its kind to partner with community and health organizations to extend breast cancer screenings and awareness through its corporate operation.

“We’re excited to take Belk’s fight against breast cancer on the road,” she said.
