ROAN MOUNTAIN — A woman was charged with stealing an azalea bush by the Carter County Sheriff's Department after the owner of the plant said he found it outside her apartment.
Deputy Wayne Pritchard was dispatched to the Highlander Barbecue on May 30, where he spoke with owner Daryl Turbyfield. The owner told Pritchard someone had stolen the bush from his restaurant. He said he had surveillance video of the incident. He said he had found a vehicle matching the one in the video and it was parked at 117 Main Street.
Pritchard went to the address and found the azalea outside Apartment 6. He asked the resident, Janet Marie Tupay, where she had bought it. After telling her the theft had been caught on video, Pritchard said Tupay admitted taking it from Highlander Barbecue.
Pritchard returned the bush to Turbyfill and issued a criminal summons for Tupay, charging her with theft under $500.
