The inaugural Jerry Shankle Memorial Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 has been awarded to Benjamin Jones. Benjamin will be attending East Tennessee State University in the Fall and his anticipated major is Elementary Education.
Benjamin has an exceptional academic record at Unaka High School including honors such as being in the Top Ten Percent of his class for each of his four years at UHS. He has earned numerous Certificates of Academic Excellence for his coursework and obtained the highest grade in many of his courses.
A pillar in the Stoney Creek community, Benjamin has volunteered his time with the American Red Cross Blood Drive, Special Olympics, Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Ministry and countless other volunteer efforts both at Unaka High School and within the community. Additionally, Benjamin was a member of the UHS Boys’ Basketball team playing the forward position. In the essay part of his application, Benjamin writes “some words you can use to describe a [Unaka] Ranger are pride, integrity, determination, loyalty, good sportsmanship, and a commitment to excellence.”
He goes on declare that “being a Ranger means showing respect to other people.” Clearly, Benjamin’s love for his school along with his academic record and community service make him an excellent candidate to receive the inaugural Jerry Shankle Memorial Foundation Scholarship. Benjamin is the son of Bill and Naomi Jones. His grandparents are the late Viola Pierce and the late Basil and Lucy Jones. He has two older sisters: Sarah who is a 2012 graduate of ETSU with an education degree and Danielle who is a senior at ETSU with a double major in Biology and Spanish and who plans to attend Medical School.
