Funeral underway for referee who died after punch

SALT LAKE CITY — A funeral service is underway to honor the memory of a Utah soccer referee who was punched by a player and later died.
After an afternoon wake at a community center, a group of men carried a wooden casket carrying the remains of Ricardo Portillo about a quarter mile to a nearby Catholic church.
About 200 people — most wearing white shirts — packed into the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Salt Lake City for an evening funeral service conducted in Spanish.
Portillo was born in Mexico, but had lived in Utah for the past 17 years.
Earlier Wednesday, the teenager who police say punched the 46-year-old Ricardo Portillo was charged with homicide by assault.
Prosecutors say they will seek to try the teen as an adult.
