A man wanted in Georgia briefly escaped in handcuffs from Johnson City police Monday before being recaptured in a foot chase, police said in a news release.
Police had gone to Volunteer Lodge at 2316 Browns Mill Road looking for Cody Mattox, 19, but he initially gave them a false identity. As he was being patted down for his arrest, he tried to destroy a glass pipe commonly used for drugs, police said.
After he was in handcuffs, an officer was placing Mattox in a police cruiser when he escaped, but he was caught after a short foot chase.
Mattox was charged with identity theft, tampering with evidence and escape. He was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $70,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance today.
