Carter Co. man charged in theft of uncle's money

ELIZABETHTON — A Carter County man was arrested Tuesday on charges he entered the home of his uncle and stole about $2,200 in cash from him.

Albert Daniel Hawks III, 37, 166 Beryl Blevins Road, was arrested by Investigator Larry Vaughn of the Carter County Sheriff's Department on charges of theft over $1,000 and aggravated burglary.

Hawks made an appearance in Sessions Court on Wednesday. Judge John Walton appointed a public defender for Hawks and set his next appearance for June 6.

Vaughn said he began his investigation of the case on Saturday afternoon, when Larry Bowling told him someone had taken money from his Price Road home. Bowling said he discovered the theft when he went to get some money to pay his neighbor for taking care of his dog. When he checked in his dresser, he found the cash he had from cashing his two checks on Friday were missing. He said the money was in two envelopes, one with $1,200 and one with $400. He said a pickle jar holding about $400 in spare change and money was also stolen.

Vaughn said he talked with several neighbors who said they saw a man enter Bowling's residence through a side door. The man was identified as Hawks.

Vaughn said Hawks gave a verbal and written admission that he had taken the money and had spent it all on Saturday and Sunday. He said there was nothing left.
