Two with East Tennessee ties caught in Afghan suicide blast; one killed, one wounded

One person with ties to East Tennessee was killed and a second was seriously wounded in a suicide bomber’s attack on a U.S. military convoy in southern Afghanistan on Saturday.

Army Staff Sgt. Christopher “Chris” M. Ward of Oak Ridge was one of three U.S. service members killed in the blast, along with U.S. Department of State diplomat Anne Smedinghoff and a Department of Defense civilian, while en route to deliver donated textbooks to students.

Also wounded was Kelly Hunt, a former News Sentinel staffer who now serves as a public diplomacy officer with the State Department.
