Johnson City police: Kmart shoplifting case escalates into ID theft

A Butler woman was arrested Saturday on an identity theft charge after an investigation into alleged shoplifting at Kmart, 3019 Peoples St., Johnson City police said in a news release.

Amanda K. Weldon, 31, 237 Grindstaff Road, was apprehended by store loss-prevention officers after they say she concealed 13 items inside her purse and clothing. The merchandise was valued at $152.33.

During the investigation, police said Weldon assumed a false identity and gave officers incorrect identifying information, such as a false Social Security Number, date of birth, name and address. She was charged with identity theft and misdemeanor shoplifting.

Weldon was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where she was held on $6,000 bond. She has a preliminary hearing in Washington County Sessions Court today at 9 a.m.
