Spring home improvement scams budding in Northeast Tennessee

Local police are warning that Spring brings more than budding plants and warmer temperatures, but also an increase in home improvement scams.

A Sullivan County resident was allegedly the victim of such a scam just last week, when a man reportedly approached her about a load of asphalt he needed to offload. He agreed to simply patch a few spots in the woman's driveway, according to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, at a few dollars per square foot.

But when the suspect finished his job he allegedly demanded $8,500 for the work — which days later began to crumble. The woman refused to pay and he lowered his price to $4,000, according to police, prompting an investigation into the incident with charges pending.
