A Kentucky woman accused of leaving her 10-month-old child in a hotel room while she went to a bar to drink was arraigned in Washington County Sessions Court on Thursday.
Tina T. Strange, 30, 528 Blackburn Ave., Ashland, Ky., is charged with non-violent child abuse and neglect. She was arrested after police responded to the DoubleTree Hotel around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Hotel staff apparently called police after locating the infant in the hotel room alone and taking her to the office.
Several witnesses told Officer Brian Vicchio they saw Strange in the hotel bar drinking, and that she had walked across the road to the Electric Cowboy. That’s where Officer Andrew Conners found Strange and took her into custody.
Strange filled out paperwork to request a court-appointed attorney, but during her arraignment, Judge James Nidiffer asked if she intended to hire an attorney or bond out of jail. Strange’s husband was in the courtroom and told the judge he would post his wife’s $10,000 bond and hire a lawyer to represent her.
The couple’s child remained in the custody of the Department of Children’s Services until a judge determines where to place her. That hearing is scheduled in Johnson City Juvenile Court today.
Strange’s preliminary hearing on the child abuse charge is scheduled for March 28.
