ELIZABETHTON — The Carter County Sheriff's Department has arrested a man on charges of possessing to two stolen guns. The guns were reported stolen at different times from different Carter County gun owners.
Richie L. Caraway, 32, 323 Heaton Creek Road, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on one charge of possession of stolen property over $1,000 and one charge of possession of stolen property under $500.
The guns were discovered when Caraway was arrested on Feb. 22 on a failure to appear warrant issued by Sessions Court. During the arrest, Caraway's father gave consent to search the residence. Sgt. Harmon Duncan discovered a stolen Ruger Mini-14 .223 cal. rifle with a shoulder sling and a scope. He also discovered a Ruger P95 9 mm. pistol.
The Mini-14 rifle had been reported as one of nine guns stolen on Feb. 13 from a gun cabinet at a residence on Nature's Trail Road in Roan Mountain.
Caraway told Investigator Larry Vaughn that he knew the rifle was stolen when he paid a man $150 for it. He said he was not the one who stole the gun.
The P95 pistol was reported stolen from a pickup truck while it was parked at 510 Hughes Gap Road in Roan Mountain on Dec. 22.
Caraway told Vaughn he had bought he pistol several months before it was reported stolen. Vaughn said that during the time Caraway claimed he owned the gun it had actually been held in the evidence room of the sheriff's department on an unrelated investigation. The pistol had then been returned to its owner prior to the theft on Dec. 22.
