Two-car crash leads to shoplifting arrest

A Piney Flats man was arrested Tuesday following an investigation into a series of shoplifting reports from area businesses, including stealing an iPad from a local store Jan. 8, according to a police news release.
According to the release, officers responded to Walmart on Jan. 8 because of a two-car crash in the parking lot. When they arrived at the store, the officers were notified by a store employee that a man was being chased from the store after theft detectors went off.
The report said that the man, Isaiah L. Shepherd, 28, 700 N. Austin Springs Road, Apt. 1, got into a green Explorer or Blazer, was driving recklessly and hit an employee’s car while fleeing from the scene.
After reviewing surveillance footage from the store, police said Shepherd had asked an employee to look at an iPad and then placed it in his waistband when the employee wasn’t looking. When he exited the store, detectors in the front went off.
Officers located Shepherd at his residence Tuesday and placed him in custody. Shepherd was charged with six counts of theft under $500, two counts of theft over $500 and identity theft.
He was initially taken to the Johnson City Police Department, where he spoke to an investigator before being taken to the Washington County Detention Center. He was being held on $21,000 bond and was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in Sessions Court.
