Pie Wars rakes in dough as new eatery takes title

Doughs were made, sauces were stirred and toppings were carefully chosen, but in the end only one pizza parlor could come forward as the winner of the annual Pie Wars charity event.
Pie Wars: Dawn of the Dough was held Sunday at The Charles in downtown Johnson City.
Pizza N Gyro, a new restaurant located in Boones Creek, took home the coveted Pizza Cup, with past winners Scratch Brick Oven and Main Street Pizza coming in at second and third places, respectively.
The third annual Pie Wars event raised approximately $8,694.69 for CASA of Northeast Tennessee, surpassing last year’s amount of $7,215, which went toward the Children’s Advocacy Center of the 1st Judicial District.
In addition to raising more money than last year, the event also saw an increase in attendance. About 300 people tasted pizza from the participating restaurants.
“All the changes that we made to the event this year seemed to make it better than in years past,” said Samara Litvack, communication director for Young Professionals of the Tri-Cities, the group responsible for the event. “We had a great committee that worked hard on the front-end planning the event this year and then we had more than enough volunteers this year.”
Of the 10 participating pizza parlors in this year’s event, many were new.
“We had a good variety of places this year. A lot of locally-owned places, so we were really excited to get them some exposure,” Litvack said.
Litvack said the fact the event raises money for local nonprofit groups helped get more places on board.
“Word is getting out more and more each year that this event helps children’s organizations in the area. That in itself encourages businesses to support this event, which we are really grateful for,” she said.
Organizers plan to take some time off and regroup in a couple of weeks to look at bringing Pie Wars back for a fourth year.
“It’s a safe bet that we will have a 2014 event,” Litvack said.
