ELIZABETHTON — Investigators from the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Highway Patrol Critical Incident Response Team were on the scene of a discovery of skeletal remains found off Gap Creek Road near the intersection with Dry Creek Road on Wednesday morning.
Sheriff Chris Mathes said the body was discovered late Wednesday morning by a Tennessee Department of Transportation survey crew in the area where the Gap Creek Highway is being improved. The crew called 911 after making their discovery.
“We are treating this as a homicide at this time,” Mathes said.
A wallet with identification information was found with the body, but Mathes said after discussing the case with the TBI, there will be no official release of identity until after dental records have been checked.
“We have had calls from several sheriff’s departments on missing person cases and we want to be extra sure of the identity,” Mathes said.
Mathes said the body was removed from the site at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and will be transported today to the University of Tennessee for analysis. “We will continue to treat this as a homicide unless it can be proved otherwise,” Mathes said.
