Carter Co. man charged with assaulting girlfriend with car

ELIZABETHTON — A man was arrested by the Carter County Sheriff's Department last week after he was accused of running over his girlfriend's belongings and nearly striking her with his vehicle.

Matthew Dallas Hammett, 37, 295 Rocky Branch Road, was charged with aggravated assault under the Domestic Violence Law. He is scheduled to answer the charge in Sessions Court on Jan. 8.

Megan K. Chorvas told Sgt. Wayne Pritchard of the sheriff's department that she had moved out of her boyfriend's residence on Nov. 13 and moved in with her mother. She said when Hammett came home from work and realized she had moved, he loaded up the rest of her possessions and took them to her mother's residence.

Chorvas said he placed the items in front of the residence, in the emergency lane of Watauga Road. When she went to retrieve the items, Chorvas said Hammett was traveling west on the road and swerved in an apparent attempt to strike her with his vehicle. Chorvas said she moved out of the way and Hammett's vehicle struck her belongings.

Pritchard said he observed several of Chorvas' possessions scattered along the road for approximately 100 feet. Chorvas' mother told Pritchard she witnessed the incident from the kitchen window.
