NASHVILLE (AP) — Nashville police say a police officer was shot in the leg and an armed suspect was shot in the chest after he ran away from officers during a routine traffic stop in Nashville.
Police spokesman Don Aaron told WKN-TV (http://bit.ly/TsUKxW ) that 18-year-old Eric Perkins was pulled over Monday morning in east Nashville by Officer Michelle Steidl. After a background check showed a criminal record, Steidl asked to search the vehicle.
Police said Perkins drove away, then ditched his vehicle and ran off on foot. A backup officer, 44-year-old Faye Denson, chased the suspect down an alley and was shot in the leg. She was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.
Another officer, Carroll Fondaw, then shot Perkins in the upper torso. Perkins is in critical condition.
