Take away blowout losses to Cherokee and Sullivan South, and Volunteer has a fairly nice body of work.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, Science Hill is better than Cherokee or South.
The Hilltoppers travel to Church Hill tonight for a Big Eight Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
In other Big Eight contests, Sullivan Central is at Daniel Boone, David Crockett plays host to Sullivan South, and Dobyns-Bennett hits the road to play Tennessee High.
Science Hill is 4-0 in league play and 7-0 overall while Volunteer enters with records of 2-2 and 3-4. Hilltoppers head coach Stacy Carter said Volunteer head coach Scott Rider has some talent on his team.
“Scott’s team is a little better than it usually is,” said Carter. “They played Boone tough, just an eight-point game.”
That is an attention-grabber for the Hilltoppers, who battled their way to a 17-0 win over Boone last week. However, Carter said he thinks his team will bounce back and play better.
“They are ready to go,” said Carter. “We shot ourselves in the foot a lot last week. We had a lot of penalties that we need to clean up. We want to make a better showing. Hopefully we will come out and play better this game.”
One area the Hilltoppers are getting better is along the defensive line, said Carter.
“We need to keep improving on the defensive line like we have been,” said Carter. “Offensively, we need to have consistency in the running game. It’s something we have worked on.”
Volunteer boasts a pair of good runners in Casey Price and Sam Barton. Quarterback Keith Cradic has totaled over 800 yards of offense.
Science Hill quarterback Reed Hayes is closing in on 2,000 total yards. He enters tonight’s game needing 147, and is averaging 265 per contest.
Sullivan Central (0-4, 3-4) at Daniel Boone (2-2, 5-2) — The Trailblazers can’t afford to dismiss the Cougars because this is a rivalry even though Boone has dominated in recent years.
The Trailblazers have won eight straight and 10 of the last 11. They are probably a little anxious to get some points on the board after moving the football against Science Hill last week but failing to score.
Quarterback Jacob Littleton has totaled 1,158 yards of offense and accounted for 12 touchdowns.
Sullivan South (1-3, 3-4) at David Crockett (0-4, 2-5) — The Pioneers are 0-5 in this relatively new rivalry, and face an underdog role once again.
South’s offense, led by dual-threat quarterback Charlie Moore, is Crockett’s biggest concern. Moore leads the Big Eight Conference with 1,481 yards passing and has 16 touchdown tosses.
Dobyns-Bennett (4-0, 7-0) at Tennessee High (3-1, 5-2) — The Indians have been explosive in all phases of the game, scoring not only on offense but also racking up points with big defensive plays and special teams. They are averaging 57 points per game.
Tennessee High has been able to score as well, totaling 33 points per contest. So the scoreboard could be smoking, even though D-B’s defense is coming off of back-to-back shutouts.
Indians’ running back Devaun Swafford is the Big Eight’s leading rusher with 708 yards, and is averaging 12.9 yards per carry.
