Man arraigned on Carter Co. murder charge

ELIZABETHTON — Israel B. Goudy, 32, was arraigned in Carter County Sessions Court on Tuesday morning on charges of second degree murder and tampering with or fabricating evidence.

The charges stem from the Oct. 16, 2011 shooting death of Larry Whittaker at Whittaker's home at 257 Reynolds Road.

Sheriff Chris Mathes has said the evidence tampering charge was a result of Goudy's attempts to make the shooting appear to have been done in self defense. Whittaker's body was found in the front yard on the night of the shooting with a gun in his right hand and knife nearby.

The sheriff said Goudy gave conflicting statements to investigators immediately following the shooting. Goudy also had several stab wounds which have now been described as both superficial and self inflicted.

Mathes said Goudy has now admitted under questioning that he planted the gun and the knife after Whittaker died and even fired a round from the gun in order to get powder residue on Whittaker's hand. Goudy reportedly made his confession on Sept. 21.

During Tuesday's appearance Judge John Walton appointed a public defender for Goudy. Walton also scheduled Goudy's next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 13.

Goudy's bond remains at $100,000.
