Names drawn for first, second, third place in $10,000 car cash giveaway

BRISTOL — Pansy Wilkinson said she has never won anything in her life.
So, when her name was called out as the winner of the $10,000 car cash giveaway Friday night at Bristol Motor Speedway during the first annual giveaway hosted by the Johnson City Press and Kingsport Times-News, she squealed in delight and skipped forward with a big smile on her face.
Over the last nine weeks people, like Wilkinson, have been putting their names into a drawing, hopeful to be the winner of the car cash giveaway.
According to Press Publisher Justin Wilcox, there were more than 4,000 entries in the contest and the finalists were narrowed down to around 90 entries.
He said 10 finalists were picked each week during the nine-week contest and all were invited up to a suite at the speedway for the final three random drawings for first, second and third place. Guests were given refreshments as they waited for the drawings to begin.
Wilkinson, a retired English and social studies teacher from Bluff City Middle School and a Piney Flats resident, said she came with her two sisters, Dolores Chapman and Janet Elliott, who were also finalists in the contest.
“We went every Tuesday and dropped our cards in,” she said. “I was just so excited the minute I saw it in the paper. I said ‘I’m going to enter.’ I thought it was time to get a car and what better way than to get $10,000 off.”
Wilkinson said she’s never been to a Bristol race before and was excited for the chance to experience the final drawing from the suite.
“It was classy. It was fun,” she said. “It was really fun to be here and they were very hospitable. Very kind and everything was very nice. The nicest of all was … when my name was called.”
Huey Ramsey was the second-place winner of a weekend getaway to Opryland in Nashville and John Wambach won a $500 gift card for gasoline.
The participating auto dealerships for the giveaway included Bachman-Bernard, Phil Bachman Toyota, Phil Bachman Honda, Friendship Hyundai of Bristol, Friendship Hyundai of Johnson City, Gateway Ford, Johnson City Honda, Ramey Ford, Toyota of Kingsport, Tri-Cities Nissan and Wallace Volkswagen.
Times-News Publisher Keith Wilson as well as Times-News staff, Press staff and auto dealers were present during the giveaway.
