Roan Mountain man charged with assaulting girlfriend in Unicoi Co.

ERWIN - A Carter County man was arrested Thursday evening by officials with the Unicoi County Sheriff's Department for allegedly driving his girlfriend to a location near a local park and assaulting her.

Brandon A. Hughes, 27, 111 Hughes Hollow Road, Roan Mountain, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and aggravated domestic assault.

According to the affidavit of complaint written by Unicoi County Sheriff's Department Deputy Paul Osborne, at around 11:15 p.m. Thursday, officers advised to be on the lookout for a Acura Integra being followed by a Honda CRV traveling at high speed on Highway 107 toward North Carolina. Officers were also advised that, Hughes, the driver of the Acura had been involved in an earlier assault, according to the report.

According to a witness statement, at around 9 p.m. Thursday, Hughes contacted his girlfriend, who resides in Erwin, to ask her to drive around and talk with him. The statement said he arrived at her residence at around 9:30 p.m., and Osborne's report states Hughes drove to pull off on the far side of Rock Creek Road, where he stopped his vehicle.

The report states Hughes began threatening his girlfriend while holding a knife to her abdomen. After putting the knife down, Hughes then allegedly began striking the alleged victim in the face as he continued to threaten her. According to the report, she attempted to flee the vehicle, but Hughes followed her out the passenger's side, pushed her to the ground, and began choking her. The report states that as Hughes choked his girlfriend, told her "if he couldn't have her, that nobody will."

The victim stated Hughes stopped choking her, according to the report.

"The victim said the defendant then collapsed on top of her and started crying and apologizing to the victim for what he had just done," the affidavit states.

The affidavit states that after Hughes drove the victim home, she ran inside and called for help. Once her mother arrived at her residence, Hughes left in his vehicle, according to the report.

Officers spotted and stopped the vehicles and, according to Osborne's report, Hughes had odor of alcoholic beverages coming from his person. The affidavit states Hughes told officers he had consumed at least two alcoholic beverages of at least 16 ounces made with vodka he had in the passenger's seat of his vehicle. The report states Hughes performed poorly of field sobriety tests and a breath test indicated his blood alcohol level to be 0.12.

Osborne's report states that Hughes' girlfriend had injuries around her neck, on her forehead, on her left elbow and back, which are consistent with statements she had made regarding the alleged assault.

Hughes remained in the Unicoi County Jail on a $30,000 corporate bond. He is scheduled to appear in Unicoi County General Sessions Court on Nov. 12.
