Science Hill came up 13 strokes short in the TSSAA Class AAA state golf championships at WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester on Wednesday.
After an opening-day 301, the Hilltopper followed it up with a 305. The total of 606 was off the pace of Murfreesboro Siegel, which shot a 593.
Heading into the 15th hole on Wednesday, Science Hill head coach Kevin Vannoy said his team was still in contention for a title.
“That last little stretch got us,” said Vannoy. “But we gave our best effort. I’m proud of what the guys accomplished. We gave ourselves a chance.”
Drew Poland was blistering the course at 5-under par heading into the 16th hole. But a shot strayed six inches out of bounds, and he triple-bogeyed the hole. He finished bogey, bogey and had to settle for a 72.
Poland’s two-day total of 147 was one stroke away from a top-10 finish. He wound up in a tie for 11th.
Andrew Simonsen finished at 150, tied for 20th. Peter Chang followed up a 72 with an 83.
Knox Farragut’s Stuart Thomas earned the individual title, beating Siegel’s Arjuna Anday and Dickson County’s Ben Wolcott in a playoff. All three finished at 140.
On the girls’ side, Science Hill’s Allison Woodward finished tied for sixth. She shot 78-77 for 155. Clarksville’s Samantha Gotcher won with a 141.
