Science Hill is eight strokes off the lead in third place after Tuesday’s first round of the TSSAA Class AAA state golf championships at WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester.
The Hilltoppers shot 301 and tied with Farragut and defending state champ Hendersonville. Siegel leads the eight-team field at 293 and Houston is second at 296. Cookeville, Hardin County and Ravenwood round out the field, all within 15 strokes of the leaders.
Peter Chang led Science Hill in the first round, shooting a 1-over 73, including 1-under 35 on the first nine holes in a round that included two birdies. Chang is in a four-way tie for 10th place and trails individual leader Arjuna Anday of Siegel by five strokes.
Andrew Simonsen and Drew Poland both shot 75 and sit in an 11-way tie for 20th. Stephen Wang shot 78 and Zach Botts shot 92.
Anday leads after back-to-back rounds of 34 for a 4-under 68, while Hendersonville’s Noah Trenkler is one stroke back at rounds of 33 and 36. Dobyns-Bennett’s William Nottingham, playing as an individual, is tied for fifth with a 1-under 71.
In the girls’ tournament, Science Hill’s Allison Woodward competed as an individual and is in a four-way tie for 10th place at 78. She is seven strokes off the lead set by Samantha Gotcher of Clarksville at 71.
Daniel Boone’s Haley Wagner also competed as an individual and is in a three-way tie for fifth five shot back at 76.
Clarksville leads the girls team competition at 146, three strokes ahead of Farragut. Sullivan South is nine shots back at 155, paced by Allyson Dunn who sho 77 and Lacie York, who is tied with Woodward.
