Bluff City teen faces vehicular homicide, assault charges

A Bluff City teenager who turned in front of a motorcycle that crashed and killed the rider in May was arraigned on homicide and assault charges in Washington County Sessions Court Tuesday.
Seth L. Green, 19, 1161 Old Elizabethton Highway, Bluff City, is free on a $25,000 property bond. The bond was originally set at $100,000, but Judge John Kiener reduced that prior to Green turning himself in to authorities on Monday.
Green was booked into the detention center on charges of vehicular homicide and reckless aggravated assault. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in court Tuesday.
The wreck happened at 10:20 p.m. on May 23 at the intersection of West State of Franklin Road and West Walnut Street. Green was stopped on West State of Franklin, waiting to turn left onto West Walnut in a 2001 Ford F150.
A vehicle in front of Green’s truck made the turn and Green immediately followed that car to turn as well, according to a court document filed by investigation officer, Lt. Larry Williams.
Green turned in front of a motorcycle, driven by Burrell Mitchell, 39, of Johnson City. Mitchell was southbound on State of Franklin and, according to Williams, was approximately 215 feet and 2.42 seconds from the point of impact when Green turned in front of him.
Mitchell died at the scene and his rider, Jennifer Newman, received serious injuries, but survived.
“Based on the findings of this investigation there is probable cause to believe that the defendant’s reckless actions,” violate state statute on reckless homicide, Williams wrote in the court affidavit.
Green is scheduled for a hearing in the case on July 19 at 1:30 p.m.
