Team Wandell sets world record

Staff reports • Updated Mar 19, 2018 at 8:24 PM

Josh Wandell and his friends set out to break a world record and now they’ve done it.

Racing in the Anthem Shamrock Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jeff Vance pushed Wandell’s wheelchair to a time of one hour, 35 minutes, 12 seconds. That time has been recognized by the people at Guinness World Records as the best time ever for a half-marathon by a man pushing a wheelchair.

Wandell, former principal at East Side Elementary School in Elizabethton, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2013.

With other members of “Team Wandell” running along, Vance and Wandell broke the previous published world record by about eight minutes. They had set out to break the mark earlier in the year and had everything approved by the Guinness folks beforehand.
