Chaney, Place win dramatic Turkey Trot titles

With a crowd of over 4,000 people gathered from 29 different states and three countries, the 12th annual Johnson City Up & At ‘Em Turkey Trot 5K did not disappoint in terms of drama at the finish line.

Johnson City native Jordan Chaney was able to hold off a late-charging Morgan Greene from Blountville as Chaney crossed the line in 16:56 while Greene followed in 16:58.

“I’m pretty happy with my race today,” Chaney said. “Second-place and I were just going back and forth for a couple of miles and he just eventually broke.”

The women’s race was also dramatic as Bristol, Virginia, native Stephanie Place held off former Milligan College superstar Hannah Segrave to take home the female title in a quick 17:28. Segrave finished in 17:42.

Both Place’s and Segrave’s time were good for third and fourth overall, respectively. Place was also only 17 seconds off of Canadian Olympian Lanni Marchant’s 2013 course record of 17:11.

“Training has been going pretty good before today, so I was expecting to run fast,” Place said. “I figured [Hannah] would try to pass me at the end, so I gapped her because I don’t have much of a kick. I still haven’t incorporated that much speed work into my training.”

Liberty Bell Middle School standout Jenna Hutchins finished as the fourth female and 20th overall in 18:37.

Traci Stone of Johnson City won the female masters division in 20:47 and Andy Brockmyre of Bristol, Virginia, took home the male masters title in 18:10.

Overall, there were over 1,800 people from Johnson City that ran and some of them dressed up as turkeys, pilgrims, even a Mayflower boat and a Thanksgiving dinner table made an appearance.

The course was a fairly flat one as it started outside of Cardinal Park on Legion Street and wound its way through the historic Tree Streets and eventually finished inside of Cardinal Park for a fast and memorable finish to friends and family.

The post-race celebration was filled with chocolate milk, granola bars, donuts, water and a multitude of other snacks for the runners to grab before they went off to scarf down a home cooked meal with family.
