The Mountain Empire Tennis Association is the local affiliate of the United States Tennis Association and stretches from Southwest Virginia all the way into Northeast Tennessee with over 400 members. There is no membership fee.
META was incorporated about 28 years ago as a USTA Community Tennis Association in partnership with USTA Southern Tennessee in Nashville. The Southern region includes nine states.
“We have 141 members that played in USTA leagues last year played (that) included Spring Adult, Mixed, Combo and Tri-Level leagues at NTRP ratings of 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5,” META President Jan Goodsell said.
“We also have a great youth program that is run by David Poole from Abingdon, (Va.). He works with development of the youth all the way up through the high school kids.”
There is also social tennis, which is available June, July and August for all levels of play.
They meet at the Liberty Bell Courts in Johnson City on Tuesdays and at the Ida Stone Jones Memorial Courts in Bristol, Tennessee, on Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
“It was kind of cool because recently at one of our social events, we had four interns from Eastman that are staying in the area came out to social tennis,” she said.
“They did not know each other and they were all from different places. One was from Bolivia, another was from Roanoke and one was from Atlanta. They all came out to play tennis and got to know one another. It was unusual, but pretty cool.”
There are also two summer camps left that run from June 26-29 and July 17-20.
