Prep roundup: North rallies past West Greene

KINGSPORT — West Greene scored the first 14 points before Sullivan North got going. But once the Raiders started scoring, they almost didn’t stop.

Alex Fields rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns as North advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs with a 35-14 victory over the Buffaloes.

All of North’s 443 yards came on the ground. Eric Pearcy added 126 yards while Doug Cook had 102.

Fields scored on runs of 4 and 36 yards for North, which will take on Elizabethton next week.

Eric James got things started nicely for West Greene by returning the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. Taylor McAmis put the Buffs up 14-0 with a 6-yard run.

Cook got North back in it with an 11-yard touchdown run before Fields tied it up with his first touchdown and gave his team the lead for good with his second.

Greeneville 42

Chattanooga Central 6

GREENEVILLE — B.J. Spradlin scored three touchdowns and accounted for 228 yards of offense the Greene Devils pounded past the Pounders and into the second round of the TSSAA state football playoffs.

Spradlin ran 17 times for for 171 yards and had three catches for 57 yards to lead Greeneville in both categories.

The Greene Devils racked up 363 yards of offense, guided by quarterback Wes Quarles, who completed 10 of 19 passes for 109 yards and ran in two scores.

Taylor Shuffler added a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Ben Ogle went 6-for-6 on extra points.

Tennessee High 37

Seymour 7

BRISTOL — Tyler Harmon passed for two touchdowns and the Vikings took advantage of five interceptions to beat Eagles.

Harmon, who completed nine of 15 passes for 72 yards, connected with Drendan Downs and Cody Snyder for TD strikes.

Bradley Tallman ran in Tennessee High’s first score from 20 yards out, and Gammon added a 2-yard score.

T.J. Simmons returned an interception 21 yards for another TD.

Sullivan South 42

Powell 16

KINGSPORT — Bobby Taylor and Heath Haden scored two touchdowns apiece as the Rebels cruised into the second round of the TSSAA playoffs with the win over the Panthers.

Taylor gave South a 21-8 lead at the half with an 18-yard run. The Rebels took an early lead on a 20-yard fumble return by Ashton Zanoni and a 2-yard pass from Aaron St. Clair to J.C. Garvin.

Haden had two 1-yard scoring runs in the second half and Taylor tacked on the final TD on a 5-yard run.

South had a total of 453 offensive yards. St. Clair completed 13 of 23 passes for 164 yards.

Austin-East 32

KNOXVILLE — Cordy Cox rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown, and Curtis King added for 145 yards and two scores as the Roadrunners rolled past the Longhorns.

A-E (8-3) scored on its first two possessions to take a 13-0 lead.

Maryville 41

MARYVILLE — A 24-point second quarter was more than enough for Maryville to roll past the Indians.

Stan Romberg caught three touchdown passes from Philip Juhlin, and Desmond Horne ran for two other scores for Maryville, which out-gained the Indians 408-133 in total offense.

Rockwood 32

Unaka 6

ROCKWOOD — The Rangers stayed close through the first half, trailing 12-6 at halftime, but the Tigers slammed the door in the second half ending Unaka’s season.

Unaka lone score came on a 31-yard pass from Josh Peterson to Chris Beach that evened the score at 6-all with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.

Gatlinburg-Pittman 17

Happy Valley 7

GATLINBURG — The Highlanders avenged last season’s loss to the Warriors, getting two touchdowns from Terry Phillips for the victory.

Nick Campbell connected with Jake Hodge on a two-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter. for Happy Valley’s only score. Coty Cooper returned the opening kickoff 84 yards, but a fumble cost the Warriors a shot at an early lead.
