ETSU to compete at Southern Championships
By From staff and wire reports After a successful opening tournament at the UVa. Fall Classic, the East Tennessee State men’s tennis team will compete at the 42nd annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

Email ArticleThe Southern Intercollegiate Championships, which began in 1968, is the oldest collegiate fall tournament in America. Former ETSU standout Enrique Olivares won the singles title in 2008.
The four-day event, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, features over 200 participants from 32 schools including notable ranked programs Duke, Florida, Georgia Tech, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and host Georgia.
Individually, the field of participants has 18 ITA-ranked singles players, including No. 2 John Patrick Smith of Tennessee, No. 4 Nate Schnugg of Georgia and No. 5 Guillemo Gomez of Georgia Tech. The doubles bracket features the top-two tandem teams in the nation —Smith and Davy Sandgren of Tennessee, Jamie Hunt and Schnugg of Georgia.
Leading the way for ETSU will be junior Charles Bottoni and freshman Jesus Bandres. Bottoni picked up back-to-back ranked wins over Steven Forman of Wake Forest and Mihai Nichifor of Columbia, while Bandres opened his collegiate career with victories over Ivan Salec of Radford and Nichifor.
