It's "Play ball!" next week for more than a thousand athletes and spectators as the Amateur Softball Association / USA 10 / U Girls Fast-Pitch Softball National Championship returns to Johnson City.

City leaders and tournament organizers announced the upcoming tournament, which begins with an opening ceremony this weekend and the first game Monday, at a press conference Wednesday at the Winged Deer Park softball fields.

With the gaggle of visitors flooding the area for the week to see 44 teams from as far away as California compete, the Johnson City Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates a $1 million economic impact for the region, as the teams and fans stay in hotels and eat at local restaurants.

City Commissioner Jenny Brock, who will throw out the first pitch of the tournament Monday, commended the city for enticing the annual softball tournament.

"This is a very unique place, it's a great city and I want to show it off," she said.
