Science Hill trumped another slow start with a fast finish, though it’s a troubling trend for first-year coach Keith Turner.Anna Hammaker-led CAK opened the game with a 22-7 run while Science Hill missed open perimeter shots against an active matchup zone defense. The Lady Hilltoppers finished the game missing 19 of 22 shots from 3-point range.Hammaker scored nine of her 19 points in the opening 10:20, and her 10-foot baseline turnaround made the score 22-7 with 5:40 left in the first half.Hannah Rodgers came off the bench to score six of her 12 points in the second quarter, helping Science Hill (11-0) get within 28-22 at halftime.Senior point guard Tianna Tarter (12 points, seven assists) had several of her steals and six points during a 19-2 run that gave Science Hill a 46-36 lead with 7:01 left in the game. Senior post Gabby Lyon (16 points, three blocked shots) capped the run with a tip-in. The lead was double digits the final five-plus minutes.“We’ve got to start being more prepared mentally to play,” Turner said. “But we had some girls step it up when they had to. … Hannah played great running that little baseline play against the zone. “We played hard the second half. I don’t know if Tianna ever came out of the game. She played her guts out. And Gabby toughed it out and made some big plays. She twisted her ankle twice.”Keisha Gregory scored nine points for Science Hill. Brianna Bryant scored 11 for CAK (5-4).Science Hill plays Webb today.Webb 59Daniel Boone 44Point guard Katie Collier scored 17 points and guard Micah Sheetz added 15 in the victory for Webb (10-2).Daniel Boone opened the second half on an 8-0 run that included two Taylor Carmichel treys to take a 29-26 lead on Autumn Bradshaw’s drive with 5:04 left in the third period. But Collier answered with a personal 6-0 run that included two mid-range pull-ups and a steal and fast-break layup.Carmichel (14 points) scored six straight points in the fourth quarter with a trey and three-point play to get Boone within 41-38 with 6:39 left. But three transition baskets triggered the Lady Spartans’ game-ending 18-6 surge.“They put the clamps on us,” Boone coach Travis Mains said. “They guarded and we wilted. They’re a championship team and we folded. Hopefully, we learned something from this tonight and get a little bit better. “(Sheetz and Collier) are very good basketball players. They’re tough-minded and they’ve got a very good coach.”Boone was without Courtney Vazquez (ankle).“Right now we’re playing about six kids,” Mains said. “This happened the other night against Morristown West. We just ran out of steam.”Boone (6-4) takes on CAK today in the opening game at 2:30 p.m.
