Milligan men, women picked near top of AAC

It looks like Tennessee Wesleyan and Milligan College are once again the favorites in Appalachian Athletic Conference basketball.The schools held to the top two spots in both the men and women’s AAC coaches preseason poll released Wednesday.Tennessee Wesleyan was the overwhelming favorite in the men’s poll, receiving nine of the 10 first-place votes and 97 total points for first. Milligan was second at 78 points, while Reinhardt got the other first-place vote for 70 points.Wesleyan swept the Buffs in three close games last season, including an 85-83 win in the AAC tournament semifinals. The Bulldogs won both the regular season and tournament, going 15-1 in league play. Milligan finished third at 9-7.In the women’s preseason poll, Milligan and TWC were tied for first. Both got five first-place votes for 113 points. Union was third with 96 and the other first-place vote.The Lady Buffs won the regular season title last year with a 16-2 league record, but lost to eventual tournament winner Reinhardt in the AAC semifinals. Wesleyan was second at 14-4. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Union in the other tournament semifinal.Both the Milligan men and women open the season on Nov. 12, playing host to Union College at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. The AAC tournament for both the men and women will be Feb. 26-March 1 at MeadowView in Kingsport.
