Adams lifts Science Hill past Volunteer

CHURCH HILL — Addison Adams rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns and returned a kickoff 67 yards to help Science Hill pull away from stubborn Volunteer for a 42-14 victory on Friday at Volunteer.The Hilltoppers, who improved to 4-0 in the Big Seven Conference and 6-2 overall, were playing with quarterback Malik McGue, who’d been limited to one series in the previous 11-plus quarters after injuring an ankle against Brentwood Academy.Junior cornerback Brandon Westmoreland got Science Hill on the scoreboard with a 40-yard fumble return with 9:53 left in the first quarter. It was Westmoreland’s third fumble recovery of the season, and the second he’s returned for a TD. Marcus Patton intercepted a Falcons pass at the Science Hill 3-yard line with 28 seconds left in the first half.Casey Price’s 9-yard run made the score 7-6 with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. The PAT kick was blocked.Adams scored from five yards out with 10:45 left in the second quarter, and the Hilltoppers led 14-6 at the half.Pierce’s 2-yard TD run made it 21-6 with 8:23 left in the third quarter, and Adams 3-yard scored stretched the lead to 28-6 with 21?2 minutes left in the third.Volunteer’s Robert Ramsey returned an interception 15 yards for a TD, and Matt Reed’s conversion run got the Falcons within 28-14 with 10:12 to play.But Adams returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards to the Volunteer 11, and Pierce scored two plays later. Adams added a 34-yard touchdown run with 4:05 remaining.Isaac Story had three catches for 83 yards. Fellow tight end Ian Martin had a 47-yard catch that set up Pierce’s first score.Quintin Alibocus forced and recovered a fumble at the Volunteer 39 early in the second quarter. Science Hill’s defense got a productive defensive outing from Trey Sutton, including two sacks.Science Hill hosts Daniel Boone (2-2, 3-5) on Friday. Volunteer (0-4, 0-8) hosts Sullivan Central. The Hilltoppers’ offense was rusty, failing to make a first down on each of its first three series.Volunteer outgained Science Hill 136-77 in the first half, but committed three turnovers before intermission.Science Hill hosts Daniel Boone (2-2, 3-5) on Friday. Volunteer (0-4, 0-8) hosts Sullivan Central.
