MANCHESTER — The Science Hill girls’ golf team captured the first state championship in the program’s history on Wednesday at WillowBrook Golf Club. The Lady Hilltoppers finished seven strokes ahead of Rossview (309-316) with Farragut in third at 328. Science Hill was in a three-way tie with Rossview and Warren County after the opening round, but a combined 157 from freshman Addison Baggarly and senior Allison Woodward on day two led to the state title.“Our goal after we won the region was not to be satisfied with getting down there,” Science Hill head coach Kevin Vannoy said. “We knew we had a chance to be special if we were focused. We wanted to be in contention after the first day. We left some strokes out there, but we felt good we had given ourselves a chance.“When we woke up this morning, the conditions were perfect. It just allowed for some good golf. At one point, we were 1-under as a team. We were glad to see golf being played at that high level.” Baggarly led the way with a two-day total of 152 after shooting the low round of the day with a 71. She finished third in the individual standings, four strokes behind Aubree Jones of Brighton.“As a freshman, she played phenomenal,” Vannoy said. “She had been under-par in several matches this year. She came in 1-under which was huge for us. She lived up to her potential this year.”Woodward tied for sixth individually with a 157 after finishing with a 76 on Wednesday. Erica Qin added a two-day total of 199 which didn’t count towards the team score.“Allison played like the senior she was,” Vannooy said. “She had a couple of bogeys, but then she parred out which was huge for us. Allison and Addie made some critical pars during that stretch, playing their way into a championship. It was a special time for those girls, something they’ll remember for a lifetime.”It was the 21st state championship overall for the Science Hill athletic program, including three in boys’ golf.
