Witten named Titans' coach of week

Elizabethton High School football coach Shawn Witten was chosen the Week 5 winner of the Tennessee Titans’ coach of the week on Thursday.Witten won the award with 68 percent of the vote in an online poll. He guided the Cyclones, ranked eighth in Class 4A, to a 35-13 win over Class 5A’s seventh-ranked Tennessee High on Friday night. Elizabethton improved to 4-1 with the win.“Not only does Coach Witten have his athletes play great on the field, but they are also great young men by the way they present themselves and act in the classroom and gameday,” Elizabethton principal David Wright said. “Coach does a great job and is a credit to the whole community.”As part of the award, Elizabethton High School will receive a $1,000 grant for its program from Titans owner K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. Witten will also be the team’s guest at the Titans’ season finale against the Houston Texans on Dec. 29. All of this season’s coach of the week winners, including David Crockett coach Jeremy Bosken and West Greene coach Joe Case, will be at the game. The Titans’ coach of the year will be picked from the group with an additional $2,000 grant to the winner from Adams.Other Week 5 nominees were John Overton coach Terry Anderson, Franklin County’s James Carr and Union City Side’s Darren Bowling. Carr was second in voting with 23 percent of the votes.Nominees for the award are submitted by sports writers and broadcasters across the state with specific criteria in mind, and the winner is chosen after a online vote by fans.For more on the Titans coach of the week click here.
