Lomascolo, Cards shut out Danville for sweep

DANVILLE, Va. — Johnson City is taking the Appalachian League West Division down to the last day.Nick Lomascolo threw six shutout innings and combined with two relievers to pitch a two-hitter as the Johnson City Cardinals finished a sweep of the Danville Braves with a 2-0 win Tuesday night at Legion Field.Lomascolo, making his third start of the season, allowed just one hit and one walk while fanning eight. He improved to 2-3.Ismael Brito and Fernando Baez combined for three shutout innings of relief, allowing just two baserunners. Brito sat down four batters on strikes and gave up one hit in two innigns, while Baez worked the ninth walking one, but no harm was done and he notched his fifth save of the year.The win was the fifth of the last six for the Cardinals (35-29).Kenneth Peoples-Walls had two of Johnson City’s nine hits against Danville. He scored the Cards first run on a two-out single by Jhohan Acevedo in the second.Johnson City’s other run came in the third. Devante Lacy led off with a single and reached third on a single by Vaughn Bryan. He crossed the plate when Bryan was picked off trying to steal second.Danville’s only hits were a triple by Mikey Reynolds in the third and single by Carlos Sanchez in the eighth.Johnson City returns home for its final series of the regular season, beginning Wednesday against the Burlington Royals.
