Junior Bucs ride Taylor, Hilbert to OT win at Cosby

COSBY — University High made it an all District 1 semifinal round with a 69-66 overtime win Saturday night against Cosby in the Region 1-A quarterfinals.

Marcus Taylor scored 24 points and Seth Hilbert had 17 points, seven assists and committed just one turnover to lead the Junior Bucs. UH sealed the win at the foul line.

“I’m really proud of our guys gutting out a win in a hostile environment,” UH head coach Justin Penley said. “We got down on the scoreboard late but kept fighting. Marcus hit some huge shots and Seth played great, just like you would like to see from a senior point guard.”

Calen Archer had 10 points and 10 rebounds for UH, and Marshall Hurley netted 12 points.

Cosby hit a pair of free throws to force overtime. Tate Parton scored 30 points for the Eagles, who finished the year at 17-10.

University High improved to 18-10 and plays Cloudland in the region semifinals on Tuesday at Chuckey-Doak Middle School.

Hancock County 53

HAMPTON — Cody McClain tossed in 21 points as the Bulldogs cruised to victory in the Region 1-A quarterfinals.

Hampton won its 20th game of the season and earned another shot at Unaka, which has won the last three meetings, including 64-58 last week in the district semifinals. The teams will meet Tuesday night at Chuckey-Doak Middle School.

Stanley Valentine had 12 points and seven rebounds against Hancock. Wesley Murray chipped in with 11 points, and Cheyenne Camillo added 10.

Hampton (20-13) led 41-30 at the half and wasn’t seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Unaka 71

ELIZABETHTON — The Rangers held the Wildcats to six first-half baskets and rolled in the 1-A quarterfinal.

Danny Bales led Unaka with 10 points and Logan Carrier had nine. Michael Nave, Jeffery Yerkes and Billy Bales each scored eight. The Rangers led 45-17 at the break.

Unaka plays Hampton in Tuesday’s semifinal. Clinch finished the year at 1-14.

Cloudland 81

Washburn 37

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Taylor Whitehead and Zac Potter scored 17 points apiece as the Highlander cruised in the 1-A quarterfinal.

Devin Whitehead added 15 points and Cloudland led 49-20 at halftime. The Highlanders (23-10) play UH in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Sullivan East 80

Greeneville 77, OT

BLUFF CITY — The Patriots survived the Greene Devils’ fourth-quarter rally to reach the Region 1-AA semifinals.

Sullivan East led by 22 after three quarters, but Greeneville outscored the Patriots 35-16 in the final frame to force overtime. East got late free throws from Jonathan King, Jordan James and Corben Sutherland in overtime for the win. Greeneville had a chance to tie it up again, but the 3-point shot missed.

David Casaday sank five 3-pointers to led East with 30 points. Austin Fleenor scored 18 points and King finished with 15.

Greeneville, which ended the year at 21-11, got 24 points from Landon Duncan, 21 from Trevor Wright and 16 from Hayes Culbreath.

Berean Christian 60

Tri-Cities Christian 50

Caleb Atkins scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Eagles lost in the TAACS Eastern Regional.

Holden Joseph had 13 points and Noah Rosebalm added 11 for Tri-Cities, which will play Thursday in Nashville in the TAACS state championship.

Emily Fox sank three 3-pointers and was named the tournament MVP as the Lady Eagles advanced to TAACS state tournament.

Alicia Cook scored 13 points and Fox finished with 11 points against Berean in the Eastern Region Championship. Becca Cox, Sarah Cox and Lindsey Hofer were also named to the all-tournament team.

Fox hit six 3-pointers and Sarah Cox made 5 in Tri-Cities win on Friday night in the semifinals. The Eagles play next week in Nashville.
