A public memorial service for former Science Hill football player and coach Kermit Tipton will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Kermit Tipton Stadium.
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who will be one of the speakers, and Science Hill coach Stacy Carter are among those who will attend.
The event will be held on the visitors side of Kermit Tipton Stadium, and will be moved to the new gymnasium if it rains.
Tipton was Science Hill's head coach for 10 years (1956-66), an era that included Spurrier (1960-62 seasons). Spurrier won the Heisman Trophy at Florida in 1966, and coached the Gators to a national championship when Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel won the Heisman.
Also a quarterback for the 'Toppers, Tipton led Stuart "Plowboy" Farmer's teams to two of the best seasons in school history in 1939-40, compiling a 20-1-1 record.
Tipton died this past April at the age of 90.
