ELIZABETHTON — Unaka used a big third inning to take charge in an 8-1 victory over Greenback in the opening round of the Region 1-A softball tournament on Monday evening.

The Lady Rangers advance to Wednesday’s championship, where which they will play host to North Greene. They also qualified for Friday’s sectional round.

LADY RANGERS STRIKE IN THE THIRD

After two scoreless innings, Unaka’s offensive attack got things rolling.

Sydney Markland opened things with a single, and Taylor Shanks and Sarah Tipton loaded the bases. Madison Pierce drove the first run across the plate with a single and Katlyn Weaver and Erika Potter each had a two-run single to give Unaka a 5-0 lead.

Greenback got a run back in the fourth by capitalizing on a pair of Unaka errors, but the Rangers saw Markland drive two runs across the plate in the sixth and Tipton added another to secure the win.

SCHEUTTLER DOMINATES

Corie Schuettler kept the Lady Cherokee guessing at the plate as she pitched a dominant game. She struck out 13 Greenback batters and allowed just three hits. The lone Greenback run was unearned.

UNAKA LEADERS

Savannah Tipton was 3 for 3 at the plate, while Sarah Tipton and Pierce contributed two hits apiece. In all, Unaka had 12 hits.

Weaver and Potter both had a team-high two RBIs.

THE ROAD CONTINUES

Unaka will welcome a familiar foe with a region championship and home sectional game on the line in the Lady Huskies. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
