Food stamps

Published February 13, 2013

The farm bill includes food stamp eligibility. Some say stamps don’t help farmers. It’s obvious. Stamps are given to those in need of food. They buy what farmers produce.

Yes a few addicted to drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, will rob their families and taxpayers to support their addiction. It is a felony to buy or sell food stamps. I know of a recent case where the husband/father sold the family’s stamps, was caught and permanently barred from ever having access to stamps again. He is disabled.

More could be caught if reported to 1-800-241-2629. Complaining or blaming does harm. It destroys the integrity of the program. The program seems overly generous to some, yet people still run out of food. Adequate food reduces hunger and health care costs.

With food stamps, businesses sell more. When they do, they hire more and only then. Regulations make expansion more difficult, but as necessary to protect customers and employees from a few unscrupulous employers. Yet, many blame government.

I know many don’t trust government. Each party scandalizes the other party.

I consider money paid for government welfare and agencies helping the poor as a part of my tithe. Welfare was part of tithe when the Bible was first written. There are more poor now than the churches can handle. Neither children nor their parents choose their parents, nor their current economic standing. Why would anyone choose poverty?
