Suzanne was born on March 21, 1941 to NJ and Nina Stanford in Nashville, TN. She grew up in Spring Hill, TN, and graduated from Spring Hill High School in 1959. She received her BS from Harding College in 1963 and her Masters from the University of Tennessee in 1964. She met her future husband, Charles “Chig” Gunter, at the Christian Student Center at UT.
Suzanne taught at Freed Hardeman College for one year and was the chairman of the department of home economics. She married Chig in June 1965. She licensed daycare centers in Knox County with the Department of Human Services from 1965-1966, and then they moved to Johnson City, TN, which has been home ever since. Suzanne taught at University School for 5 years. She was an active member of the Central Church of Christ. For approximately 30 years, she has taught children’s pre-school Bible classes and participated in other ladies’ projects.
Throughout the years, Suzanne has enjoyed gardening, crafts, and sewing projects. She has sewn countless items from diaper shirts for children in Nicaragua to dog clothes to a beautiful wedding dress for her daughter. She has always been a good cook. Early on, her cherry pies won 4-H awards, and in later years, her homemade pizza was always a treat her family looked forward to. She enjoyed travels with family, especially a special 50th Wedding Anniversary trip to the West Coast. Among her favorites were trips to beaches where she collected a ton of shells throughout the years and created projects with them to share with others. She passed on a love for looking for treasures in the sand to her grandsons who treasured their chances to walk on the beach with “Meme”.
Suzanne is survived by: her wonderful husband of fifty-two years, Charles “Chig” Raymond Gunter; one son, David Gunter; one daughter, Ramonda Gunter Scott and her husband Chad, who became another son; three grandsons, Graham, Campbell, and Everett Scott; one sister, Nina Hausmann; and nieces and nephews, Jim Hausmann, Nina Massey, and Emily Hill.
A celebration of Suzanne’s life will be held on Saturday, June 2nd at Central Church of Christ, 2722 East Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, with minister Tim Hall officiating. The service will begin at 4:00, with the visitation prior to the service from 2:00 - 4:00.
