Wilma June Mays - JOHNSON CITY

The measure of greatness is not the fame and fortune we derive, but the impact we have on those we hold close. This could be no truer than a look at the life of Wilma June Mays. On November 5, 2009, she realized the wonderful promise of salvation following a lifetime of humble faithfulness.

June was born in 1927 to the late Sylvester and Mary Cobble Hensley. When she was 7 years old, June’s mother died suddenly causing her to cling to her little sister Dorothy Ellen Davison; a relationship that has remained incredibly close for their entire lives. In 1951, June met the love of her life, W.G. “Dub” Mays, who she lovingly stood by for 51 years until his death. “They loved each other as much as anyone I’ve ever seen,” said Dorothy in remembering her sister’s loving marriage.

June and W.G. traveled throughout the Southeast as he worked to build Interstate highways, and June touched the lives of those she met in places like Live Oak and Jacksonville, Florida; Ft. Benning and Macon, Georgia; and Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama. Nothing delighted her more than moving back to Johnson City in 1973, where she and Dub moved in directly behind the sister she loved so much.

June delighted in the simplicity of enjoying life with her family and friends. Nothing delighted her more than spending time with their daughter, Judy Henegar, special friend, Allen Kimberlin, granddaughter, Lori and Steve Bowen, and great-granddaughters, Chelsea Jenkins and Taylor Bowen, all of Johnson City. She was happiest just sitting on the porch with “her man” and reveling in the company of those she loved.

June also shared special relationships with her stepsons, Bobby and Barbara Mays, and Wayne and Sue Mays and their children, Jaime and Eddie Greene, of Johnson City, and Roy Wayne and Shannon Mays, of Tucker GA; special nephew, Randy Davison and his wife, Susan, of Orlando, Florida, their children, Jennifer, of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, Corporal James P. Davison, US Army, his wife, Jessica, and children of Arlington, VA, and Randi Rene’, of Melbourne, Florida.

Shortly after their marriage, W.G. and June became members of Skyline Heights Baptist Church where she has faithfully served for many years. Anyone who spoke with June knew immediately that she had a very special relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a special prayer warrior who took delight in unceasing prayer for all those she knew. Her family now offers prayers of thanksgiving for the assurance that she is in the presence of the Lord she loves so dearly, and that she is once again reunited with “her man” who made her so happy for so long.

You are invited to celebrate this beautiful life on Saturday, November 7, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home, Highway 11E, Jonesborough, TN, followed by a service of Thanksgiving at 8:00 p.m.

Interment will be at New Bethel Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at 3:00 p.m.

Condolences may be sent to the Mays family online at www.dillow-taylor.com.
