Alice Watts - FLAG POND

FLAG POND – Alice Kathleen Watts, age 87, 1911 Rice Creek Road, Flag Pond, died Saturday, October 31, 2009, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Watts was a lifelong Unicoi County resident and a daughter of the late John Henry and Elizabeth Mashburn Tipton.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Watts was of the Church of God faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Watts; one brother, Arnold Tipton; two half-brothers, Dorsie Tipton and Luke Tipton; one half-sister, Ida Foster.

Mrs. Watts is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Ward Watts; six sons, Earl Williams, Jerry Watts and wife, Mitzie, all of Erwin, Carroll Watts and Johnny Watts, both of Flag Pond, Jim Watts and wife, Nancy, Randy Watts and wife, Charlene, all of Jonesborough; two daughters, Ida Biggs and husband, Robert, Battle Ground, Washington, Shirley Merrill and husband, Gene, Chuckey; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Evelyn Chandler.

The funeral service will be conducted Monday, November 2, 2009, at 8:00 P.M. from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Winfred Shelton officiating. Special music will be provided by the Winfred Shelton Family and Inez Chandler.

The graveside committal service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 A.M. in Watts Family Cemetery, Rice Creek Community, Flag Pond. Pallbearers will be Terry Silvers, Mark Silvers, Andrew Silvers, Kelse Watts, Bobby Williams, Joel Tittle and John Rice. Family, minister, pallbearers and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 10:20 A.M. Tuesday.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel and other times at the residence.

Dorothy Cothren - JOHNSON CITY

Dorothy Mae Cothren, 65, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Ms. Cothren was born March 10, 1944, to the late Gus and Lena Giesler. She was a native of Hockley, Texas, and had lived in the local area for 4 years. She was a resident of Lakebridge Health Care Center (Johnson City, TN).

She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Tex Giesler; and her husband, A.L. Cothren.

Survivors of Dorothy Mae Cothren include daughters, Vicky Cothren (Gray, TN), Michelle Lanning (Crosby, TX); and a sister, Nancy Bartels (Dickinson, TX).

Memorial services, officiated by Rev. Mac (from Lakebridge Health Care Center), will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2009, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Snyder’s Funeral Home (5913 Kingsport Highway, Gray, Tennessee 37615).

Ennis Brooks - JOHNSON CITY

Ennis Grindstaff A.G. Brooks, age 84, went to be with the Lord Friday, October 30, 2009, at Broadmore Assisted Living in Johnson City following a lengthy illness.

She was a native of Yancey County, NC, and a daughter of the late Samuel J. and Lola Randolph Grindstaff.

Mrs. Brooks was a medical assistant to the Director of Nursing at the Oak Ridge Hospital and worked for 13 years for Dr. Cupp as medical assistant and office manager. She belonged to the Medical Assistant Association and had served as past president. She had also worked many years as a medical assistant in a variety of places.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, Alva Ayles, Dr. Charles Gresham and McNeil Brooks; three brothers, R.K., Lewis and Dennis Grindstaff; two sisters, Gladys Hodges and Elizabeth Adkins.

Survivors include two brothers, Roger Grindstaff, of Asheville, NC, and Sammy Grindstaff, of Green Mountain, NC; a sister, Sheril Lyda, of Asheville, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mrs. Brooks will be conducted Monday, November 2, 2009, at 6 PM in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Dixon and Pastor John Cooper officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 4 PM until service time.

The graveside committal service will be conducted in Yancey Co., NC, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery at noon on Tuesday. There will be a viewing from 11 AM until noon at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Frances Taylor - JOHNSON CITY

Frances D. Taylor, 3209 Bristol Hwy., formerly of 523 Highland Ave., Johnson City, died Saturday, October 31, 2009, at NHC Healthcare.

Mrs. Taylor was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City.

She was a daughter of the late William H. “Bill” Dunn and Dora A. Seaton Dunn.

Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer E. Bishop; her second husband, Harold Wesley Taylor; one brother, Bill Dunn; and one sister, Alice Mae Dunn.

She was a retired nurses assistant from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and was a former hairdresser.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Bill Bishop and his wife, Irma, Greer, S.C.; three grandchildren, Jeremy Shawn Bishop, Natalie Michelle Shirley and Kelli Elizabeth Bishop, all of Greenville, S.C.; two great grandchildren, Peyton William Shirley and Parker Ryan Shirley; two sisters, Jessie Carroll Nidiffer, Elizabethton, TN, and Mary Evelyn Letterman, Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until a 3:00 p.m. service time Monday, November 2, 2009, from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel.

Graveside services will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Dr. Michael Oaks and Reverend Scott Thompson will officiate. Music will be under the direction of Kathy Thompson.

Jo Ann Fox Richardson - JOHNSON CITY

Mrs. Jo Ann Fox Richardson, 72, 1112 Ridgecrest Road, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Richardson was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Millard Ralph and Dorothy Elizabeth Powell France. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Bob V. Fox, in 2006; one sister, Peggy Coggins; one brother, Ernie France; one grandson, Seth Fox; one brother-in-law, Tom Coggins.

Mrs. Richardson was a registered nurse for over forty years. She was a fifty-year member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Terrie Fox McCue and her husband, retired Col. John “Forrest” McCue, of Gray; one son, Greg Fox, of Johnson City; two sisters, Nancy Adams and her husband, Ernie, of Henderson, Nevada, and Dianne Bryson and her husband, Ken, of Charleston, South Carolina; three brothers, Bill France and his wife, Ginny, of Paisley, Florida, Tommy France and his wife, Sharon, of Gray, and Mike France, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one sister-in-law, Lila France, of Gray; six grandchildren, Elizabeth McCue, of Knoxville, Amanda McCue, of Knoxville, Jack McCue, of Fairfax, Virginia, Roxy Fox, of Murfreesboro, Nikki Fox, of Murfreesboro, and Saydee Fox, of Johnson City; her second husband, Grayson Richardson, of Elizabethton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Johnson City TN 37601, flowers are also welcomed.

The funeral service for Mrs. Jo Ann Fox Richardson will be conducted at 11 AM Monday, November 2, 2009, in the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Tim Bracken will officiate.

The graveside committal service will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker on Sunday, November 1, 2009, from 4 to 6 PM.

Lola Johnson - JONESBOROUGH

Lola M. Johnson, age 86, Jonesborough, was called to her heavenly home Friday, October 30, 2009, at the Christian Care Center of Johnson City following a lengthy illness.

Ms. Johnson was a native of Washington County and daughter of the late Tom & Mary Duncan Johnson. In addition to her parents, Ms. Johnson was also preceded in death by one brother, Walter W. Johnson; and one sister, Julia Vines.

She was a faithful member of Enon Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school as long as her heath permitted.

Ms. Johnson worked at Southern Pottery and retired from Mayes Brothers.

Survivors include four sisters and brothers-in-law, twin sister, Lois Johnson, of the home, Myrtle Louella Treadway & J.W. Jones, Jonesborough, Lorene Adkins, Jonesborough, and Annie & Gene Peterson, Erwin; one brother and sister-in-law, Tommy & Brenda Johnson, Jonesborough; one sister-in-law, June Johnson, Harriman, TN; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 2009, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Albert Bentley and Rev. Roy Jenkins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.

Interment services will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 2, 2009, at Seviers Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Monty Treadway, David Adkins, Eddie Adkins, Tommy Johnson, Marty Johnson and Brad Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Campbell, Logan Adkins, Mike Fannon, Kenny Vines, David Stanton, Bobby Broyles and Jim Taylor.

Louise Alley - LOVETTSVILLE, VA.

LOVETTSVILLE, Va. – Louise Bond Lewis Alley, 76, a native of Washington County, TN, died on October 16, 2009, in Loudoun County, VA, of heart failure.

Louise Alley was born in Johnson City, TN, on April 9, 1933, to John Samuel Bond and Edith Clark Bond.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, John Harmon Bond, Clyde Samuel Bond, and Hoover Bond.

Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca Lewis (Jack) Durbin, grandsons, John Lewis Durbin (Christen) and Charles Edward Durbin (Brooke), and great-grandson, Corban Elijah Durbin, of Harrodsburg, KY; daughter, Teresa Fletcher Kidd (Mike), grandson, Charles Jeremiah Fletcher, granddaughter, Whitney Fletcher Smotherman (James), and great-grandson Spider Smotherman; and daughter, Ramona Louisa Lewis, with whom she lived.

Louise was a graduate of Science Hill High School in Johnson City, TN, and she attended the Roanoke, VA, Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She completed her nursing studies with a BS in Nursing from East Tennessee State University. She was employed in various care/nursing capacities until 1993.

Louise Alley was an active member of the Frederick (Maryland) Church of the Brethren (FCOB), where she was involved in the Care Ministry. She loved serving by sending cards to members/visitors for a variety of occasions and enjoyed writing brief notes of care and concern.

A celebration of Life service will be held at 5:00 PM Friday, Nov. 27th, 2009, with Pastor Jeremy Dykes officiating, at the Knob Creek Church of the Brethren located at 2591 Knob Creek Road, Johnson City, TN.

Hazel Ashley - MOUNTAIN CITY

MOUNTAIN CITY – Mrs. Hazel Ashley, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on October 30, 2009, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation of Boone, NC.

Mrs. Ashley was born September 19, 1924, in Watauga County, North Carolina, to the late George and Lona Hollars Eggers. In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Ashley, a well known local business man and community leader; two sisters: Rosa Goodson and Bina Townsend; and four brothers: Frank Eggers, Bob Eggers, Carol Eggers and Eugene Eggers.

Hazel and J.D. were the proprietors and owners of Boone Trail Dairy Bar, which was a landmark business of Johnson County for over 50 years. Mrs. Ashley continued to operate and serve her customers along side of her faithful employees until her health declined while at work in 2007. Following her illness, the Dairy Bar was closed and has been truly missed by everyone.

She was a member of Roan Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ashley is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Marian Ashley, of Boone, NC; three sisters: Ruth Cook and husband, Doc, of Boone, NC, Lucy Warren, of Sawmills, NC, and Joan Aldridge, of Jacksboro, TN; three brothers: Tom Eggers of Sawmills, NC, Charlie Eggers and wife, Martha, of Boone, NC, and Gurney Eggers and wife, Elaine, of Lake City, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; many, many special friends, including her co-workers at the Boone Trail Dairy Bar.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2, 2009, from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ed Warren to officiate.

Graveside Service and Interment will follow from the Ashley-Jennings Cemetery, located on Forge Road.

Joseph ‘Howard’ Phillips - PINEY FLATS

PINEY FLATS – Joseph “Howard” Phillips, 77, of Piney Flats, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 30, 2009, after a short illness.

He was born on December 28, 1931, in Piney Flats to the late Paul “Bulldog” and Gladys Neal Phillips. He was retired from the Sullivan County Rescue Squad, where he was captain, chaplain and dispatcher for many years and received numerous acknowledgments and rewards.

He owned and operated his own country store, Howard’s Cash Market, which was a gathering place for fellowship shared by friends and family. He was a lifetime member of Enterprise United Methodist Church and the Buffalo Ruritan Club.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Phillips; a brother, Harold Phillips and his wife, Patsy, of Piney Flats; grandchildren, Nicholas, Patrick and Kaitlin Outterbridge and Matthew and Adam McMillan; great granddaughter, Aaliyah Rain Outterbridge; sisters-in-law, Nellie “Dean” Browning and Mary Eastridge; brothers-in-law, Bill Eastridge and Ed Tittle; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Phillips; and a sister, Frances Tittle.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 o’clock Monday evening, November 2, 2009, at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home.

The funeral service will follow at 8 o’clock in the funeral home chapel with Pastor George Hall and Rev. Dan Theiben officiating.

The committal service and interment will be held at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Max Coats, Ed Smith, Jim Smith, Matthew McMillan, Adam McMillan and Richard Garland. Honorary pallbearers will be Daren Outterbridge, Nicholas Outterbridge, Patrick Outterbridge, Lee McMillan and beloved missionary friend of Africa, Mike Brown.

Lloyd Verran - WHITEVILLE, N.C.

WHITEVILLE, N.C. – Lloyd Gene Verran, 72, died Wednesday Oct. 14, 2009, after an extended illness at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

He was born in Carter County, TN, on March 3, 1937, to the late Harley E. Verran Sr. and Hazel McKeehan.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Harley Verran Jr. and Gary Verran.

He was a Veteran of The United States Air Force and Navy.

He was a Medical Technician for over 45 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lou Ellen Verran, of Whiteville; a son, Bill Bullard, of Raleigh; brothers, Connie Verran, of Elizabethton, TN, and Gregory Verran, of Lenoir; and two grandchildren.

Final rites were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Northwood Assembly of God in Whiteville.
