Zeola Perkins - BAKERSVILLE, N.C.

BAKERSVILLE, N.C. – Zeola Hughes Perkins, age 86, of the Buladean, NC, community, passed away October 29, 2009, at the Glenbridge Health and Rehab in Boone, NC.

She was a native of Mitchell County, NC, and was the daughter of the late David and Hannah Garland Hughes. She was a homemaker and enjoyed making afghans for her family and friends. She was a member of St. Paul Freewill Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include: son, J.C. Perkins and wife, Erma, of King, NC; daughter, Doris Storie and her husband, Marvin K., of Boone, NC; grandchildren, Joey Perkins, Regina Gordon, Tonya Barlow, Sheila Storie and Claudia Cook; great grandchildren, Jacob, Lucas, Garrett, Aaron, Taylor, Korbel and Carson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Perkins, who passed away in 2000; two sisters and seven brothers.

A celebration of life will be held, Sunday, November 1, 2009, at 7:00 PM in St. Paul Freewill Baptist Church. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service. Roger Laws and Scott Jenkins will be officiating.

Interment will be Monday, November 2, 2009, at 11:00 AM in the Hughes Cemetery (Blevins Branch Rd).

Gynith Morrell - ELIZABETHTON

ELIZABETHTON – Gynith Lee Morrell, 55, Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 30, 2009, in the Johnson City Medical Center after a battle with Cancer.

A native of Welch, West Virginia, she had lived in Carter County for a number of years. She was a former employee of White’s Super Market and was presently employed at Food City where she had worked for the past 10 years. She attended Calvary Church, Johnson City.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Joseph Willard Morrell; and her father John Anderson Burnette.

Survivors include a daughter: Michelle Lee Combs, of the home; Two Sons: Anthony John and Amy Burnette, Elk Park, North Carolina, and Joseph Isaac Earl Morrell and Lindsey Walker, of the home; Three Grandchildren: Anthony John Burnette II, Haylee Joe Morrell and Kiera Lynn Morrell; Her Mother: Louise Belcher Burnette, Newland, North Carolina; Two Brothers & Their Wives: Dewey and Gloria Belcher, Atlanta, and Danny & Rosa Belcher, Bristol; several nieces & nephews and many special friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Richard Hilton officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence.

It was her wish to be cremated.

Gregory Peterson - FORT MYERS, FLA.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Gregory Ford Peterson, 40, of Fort Myers, Florida, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009, in Florida.

He was a native of Rock Island, Illinois. Gregory and family moved to Johnson City, where he first attended school. His high school years were in Florida, where the family relocated following the death of his mother.

He is the son of Ford H. Peterson, of Jonesborough; and the late Ina Jean Smith Peterson. Gregory was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Survivors, other then his father, include: a daughter, Elsa Peterson, of Fort Myers, FL; two sons, John E. Peterson and Isaac W. Peterson, both of Fort Myers; four sisters, Crystal Newton, of Fort Myers, Judee Silver, of LaJolla, CA, Janie Jarvis, of Kingsport, and Alice Peterson, of Altos, CA; a very Special Mom, Barbara Hughes, of Jonesborough; several aunts, uncle, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Gregory Ford Peterson will be conducted at 2:30 PM Sunday, November 1, 2009, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Pastor Bill Burrows will officiate.

Interment will follow in the McCarty Cemetery in Jonesborough. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 1:30 to 2:30 PM Sunday prior to the service. Active pallbearers will be selected.

Lonnie Ray - GRAY

Lonnie Jerald Ray, age 76, of Gray, TN, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Life Care of Gray following an extended illness.

He was born in Russell County, VA, to the late Howard and Sally Ellen Jessee Ray. He was a 1951 graduate of Morristown High School and also graduated from East Tennessee State University. Mr. Ray received his Master’s degree from the University of Michigan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Dean Ray; and a granddaughter, Jessica James.

Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Broyles, of Gray; five children, Randy Ray and wife, Jeanie, and Sheila Stump and husband, Jim, all of Morristown, Michael Ray and wife, Monika, of Johnson City, Melinda Hyder and husband, Dale, of Piney Flats, and Janet James and husband, Chip, of Gray; one brother, Bill Ray, of Bluff City; Twelve Grandchildren; and Thirteen Great Grandchildren.

The Graveside Service and Interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Morning View Cemetery with Rev. Reggie Weems officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Saturday in the Bluff City Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Ray, Jason Stump, Jim Stump, Dale Hyder, Dylan Hyder, Chip James and Philip James. Honorary pallbearers will be Dean Ray, Steve Ray and Jeff Ray. Military graveside Rites will be conducted by Bristol VFW Honor Guard.

Jo Ann Fox Richardson - JOHNSON CITY

Mrs. Jo Ann Fox Richardson, 72, 1112 Ridgecrest Road, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Richardson was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Millard Ralph and Dorothy Elizabeth Powell France. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Bob V. Fox, in 2006; one sister, Peggy Coggins; one brother, Ernie France; one grandson, Seth Fox; one brother-in-law, Tom Coggins.

Mrs. Richardson was a registered nurse for over forty years. She was a fifty-year member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Terrie Fox McCue and her husband, retired Col. John “Forrest” McCue, of Gray; one son, Greg Fox, of Johnson City; two sisters, Nancy Adams and her husband, Ernie, of Henderson, Nevada, and Dianne Bryson and her husband, Ken, of Charleston, South Carolina; three brothers, Bill France and his wife, Ginny, of Paisley, Florida, Tommy France and his wife, Sharon, of Gray, and Mike France, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one sister-in-law, Lila France, of Gray; six grandchildren, Elizabeth McCue, of Knoxville, Amanda McCue, of Knoxville, Jack McCue, of Fairfax, Virginia, Roxy Fox, of Murfreesboro, Nikki Fox, of Murfreesboro, and Saydee Fox, of Johnson City; her second husband, Grayson Richardson, of Elizabethton.

The funeral service for Mrs. Jo Ann Fox Richardson will be conducted at 11 AM Monday, November 2, 2009, in the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Tim Bracken will officiate.

The graveside committal service will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be family and friends.

John Vaughan - JOHNSON CITY

John B. Vaughan, 86, of Johnson City, passed away on October 29, 2009, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Born in Hawkins County, TN, he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Dosha Alice Booher Vaughan.

He graduated from Clinch High School and worked for Roosevelt’s CC Boys. Mr. Vaughan was a Merchant Marine. He then went to work at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility on the Manhattan Project. Mr. Vaughan retired from Mead Paper after forty-one years, where he was a world class welder.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gale Edward Vaughan; and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maxie Tate Vaughan, of Johnson City; daughters: Barbara Williams and husband, Fontaine Williams Jr., of McLean, VA, and Vicki Sells and husband, Dr. Sam Sells III, of Nashville; son, Billy Vaughan, of Johnson City; grandchildren: William Stacy Vaughan, Holly Loraine Vaughan, Fontaine Lee Williams III, Matthew Vaughan Sells, Stephen Walker Sells and Wendy Vaughan; great-grandchildren: Noah Vaughan, Elaina Vaughan and Tate Williams; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Services.

A Celebration of Life service will follow at 4:00 PM with Rev. Ronnie Brashear officiating. Music will be provided by Tamra Coffman.

A graveside service will be held on Monday at 2:00 PM at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Butch Yarber, James Barker, Lee Bowser, Charles Sanders, Charles Fitzgerald, Gerald Fields, Ricky Tate and Greg Rose. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Garland, Emory Deel, Roy Kindrick, Ken Everhart, Kedrick Horton, Bill “Goose” Dean, Everette Rutledge, Carl Snyder, Marvin Hobson, Donald Davidson and Bill Mathes. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 PM for procession to the cemetery.

Roger Wise - JOHNSON CITY

Roger E. Wise, age 67, passed away Friday October 30, 2009, at John M. Reed Home Nursing Home.

He was a native of Florida and formerly of Kingsport. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Wise had no known survivors.

Claude Hensley - LIMESTONE

Claude Hensley, of Limestone, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, at Mountain Home VA Medical Center.

He served in the US Army during Vietnam and Korea.

Survivors include his Wife of 48 years: Mildred Carper Hensley; 3 Brothers and 1 Sister-in-law: “Buck” Maynard Hensley, L.D. Hensley, Robert and Patsy Hensley, all of Greene County; Sister and Brother-in-law: Louise and J.B. Hensley; Special sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Linda and Stanley Smith, of Tuscan Arizona; several nieces and nephews: sister-in-law Mary Hensley, of Rogersville.

He was preceded in death by: Parents: Dewey and Blaine Hensley; 2 Brothers; J.C. Hensley, Fred Hensley; 1 sister: Minnie Hensley.

Pallbearers will be: Bennie Brockwell, John Brockwell, Johnny Idell, Carrol Brown, Joe Brown, Brent Ricker, Terry Ricker, Snide Hensley.

The visitation will be Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Jeffers Funeral and Cremation Service.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 4 p.m., November 1, 2009, at Jeffers Funeral Service Chapel.

Interment will be held at Graceland Memorial Chapel with Minister Elder David Boggs officiating.

Doris Hinkle - LITTLE ROCK, ARK.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Doris McCastlain Hinkle, surround by her loving family, went to be with the Lord on October 29, 2009.

She was a born January 23, 1918 in Graysonia, Arkansas, to the late Earl and Flossie Meeks Wagner.

She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, John Wagner and Seth Adams Wagner; husbands, Hugh Marvin “Ted” McCastlain and Col. Carl C. Hinkle Jr.; and her granddaughter, Doris Lynn Nelson.

She was a beautiful lady and a very wise woman, a person you could always go to and talk with about anything. Everyone loved to hear her stories of her childhood, adolescent years and her adult life. She was a true best friend to her children and a wonderful, loving mother. Her greatest joy was being with her “kids.” Her grandchildren lovingly called her “Goose.” She loved playing bridge, watching her birds, was an avid reader of books, her daily newspapers and The Upper Room Devotional and loved cheering on the Cowboys. She believed in living life to the fullest and she will be greatly missed.

Doris is survived by her four children, Mary Lynn Nelson and her husband, Sheffield, of Little Rock, Hugh McCastlain, of Friendswood, Texas, Julia Stoner and her husband, Terry, of Sugar Land, Texas, and Laura Sholes and her husband, Keith, of Little Rock. She is also survived by her wonderful grandchildren, Cindi Nelson Zieres and husband, Craig, of Forth Worth, Texas, Laura Ann Hendrian and husband, Bill, of Hesperia, Michigan, Kelly McCastlain, of Memphis, Tennessee, Ted McCastlain and wife, Debbie, of Little Rock, Holly McCastlain, of Austin, Texas, Travis Stoner, of Houston, Texas, Jessica Stoner, also of Houston, and Adam Sholes, of Little Rock. Her step-children are Stanley Hinkle Blair and husband, Andy, of Cedar Key, Florida, her children, Bud Adams, of Wenatchee, Washington, and Shields Adams-Plasencia, of Palm City, Florida; Chris Hinkle and wife, Kay, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and their children, Jennifer Hinkle-Stanley, of Ottawa, Kansas, Kelsey Hinkle Bardwell, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Lindsey Hinkle Ward, of Bradenton, Florida and her daughter, Shelly Crook, of Panama City Beach, Florida.

Doris was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Agape Sunday School Class and Faith Circle. She was a member of PEO and attended the International Bible Study Fellowship and the Community Bible Study.

She served as State Representative from Monroe County for five years. In 1965, Doris was appointed by Gov. Orville Faubus as Commissioner of Revenue for the State of Arkansas, the first woman to hold this position. While serving as a State Legislator, Doris was instrumental in passing a number of bills, including a bill to establish the Louisiana Purchase State Park in Monroe County. She sponsored or co-sponsored a number of important pieces of legislation, including the bill for special funds to the State Department of Education to be used for the education of handicapped children, a bill that created the Arkansas Law Enforcement Academy and a bill that created the Little Rock Branch of the University of Arkansas School of Law.

She was selected as Outstanding Legislator in 1965 and selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in the World of Women & Women in Politics. She was a Charter Member of the National Society of State Legislators and served as President of the Order of Women Legislators. In addition, she served as the State Racing Commissioner, State President of Civil Defense and State Chairman for an annual Red Cross Campaign.

Doris has 22 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Betsy Wagner of Dallas, Texas, all who will cherish her memories.

The family would like to thank her doctors, Dr. James Kane, Dr. Susan Santa Cruz and Dr. Samuel Strong; Linda Doyle, R.N., Deborah Wright, R.N.; her caregivers, Vernon White and Ruby Griffin; Rena, Rodney and Michelle of Little Rock Hair Productions; the Agape Sunday School Class and her long time friend and neighbor, Flo Pullen.

A Service will be held at St. James United Methodist Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, on Monday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Fred Haustein.

Frankie Simcox - NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C.

NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. – Mrs. Frankie Louise Simcox Wilson, age 75, of Hunter Hills Street, North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Avante At Wilkesboro.

Mrs. Wilson was born January 4, 1934, in Johnson County, Tennessee, to Selmer and Stella Simcox. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Shouns, Tennessee, but attended the First United Methodist Church in Wilkesboro.

Mrs. Wilson worked for the Ashe County Board of Education as a teacher from 1969-1970 and the Wilkes County Board of Education for 33 years, from 1970-2002. During her retirement years she was an active member of the community and enjoyed her membership with the Wilkes County Kiwanis Club. Mrs. Wilson loved her family, former students and all with whom she worked throughout her long and fulfilling life.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar (O.H.) Howard Wilson Jr.

Surviving are sons, David Goff Wilson and wife, Kendra, of Asheville, Oscar “Hal” Howard Wilson III and wife, Cindy, of Wilkesboro; daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Catherine Wilson, of Franklin, Tennessee; grandson, Seth Nolan Wilson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 o’clock Sunday, November 1, 2009, at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed McKinney officiating.

Entombment will follow at Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at Union United Methodist Church from 1:30 until 3:00 o’clock Sunday, prior to the service.

John F. Shell - ROAN MOUNTAIN

ROAN MOUNTAIN – John Frank Shell, 86, 259 Shell Creek Road, Roan Mountain, passed away Friday, October 30, 2009, in the Hillview Health Center.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late John A. and Rebecca A. McClain Shell. He was a retired Mechanic with the Brinkley Ford Motor Company, Newland, North Carolina. Mr. Shell served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post 2166 and the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge # 566.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife: Lillian Ledford Shell, March 7, 2004; an adopted daughter: Marcie Shell; a granddaughter, Melanie Ann Shell; five brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include a daughter: Jacquline Hoss, of the home; Two Sons and One Daughter-in-Law: John W. and Janie Shell and Jerald Shell, all of Roan Mountain; Five Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church with Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Perry Cemetery. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the church at 6:50 p.m. Sunday and also at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Monday will be: Terry Miller, Landon Campbell, Charles Smith, T.J. Shell, John Shell Jr., Jack Shell, Shane Hoss and Scott Bailey.

The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the Staff of Hillview Health Center for their excellent care of our father.

Hazel White - UNICOI

UNICOI – Hazel Hensley White, age 85, 115 Penny Lane, Unicoi, died Friday, October 30, 2009, at the Center on Aging and Health following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. White was a lifelong Unicoi County resident and a daughter of the late Charlie Buck and Ellen Rosa Ingle Hensley.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. White was a member of Unicoi Church of God and the Ladies Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Earl T. Hensley; and two sisters, Ruby I. White and Pauline Mae Hensley.

Mrs. White is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Lincoln White; three brothers, Robert E. Hensley, Charles Hensley and wife, Peggy, all of Unicoi, Woody Hensley and wife Anne, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, November 1, 2009, at 7:00 P.M. from the Unicoi Church of God with the Reverend Ronnie Holloway officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ladies Sunday School Class of Unicoi Church of God.

The graveside committal service will be held Monday at 10:00 A.M. in Jones Cemetery. Minister, family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 A.M. Monday.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the church and other times at the residence.
